Date change - Faculty Lecture Series Hollister Adobe

Dear Cuesta College Community:

Please note that the date has changed for the Faculty Lecture “The Hollister Adobe at Cuesta College”.  The new date is October 11, 2017 at 4:00-4:50 in room 6305.

The Hollister Adobe at Cuesta College

By Dennis Judd Emeritus History Faculty

Wednesday, October 11, 4:00-4:50 p.m.

Room 6305

Description

The Hollister Adobe is Cuesta's deepest root; originally owned by a soldier of the Mission system who retired to the three room adobe in the 1830's. The three rooms of adobe were encapsulated inside the 22 room Hollister home until exposed by the expansion of Camp San Luis Obispo in 1940; the adobe was the site of an outdoor chapel serving as a sanctuary for some of the 50,000 soldiers who would soon to be posted to the Pacific. The adobe  was inherited by Cuesta College in 1963, and restored by the campus community in 1970. Slight damage caused by the December '03 San Simeon Earthquake had the college close the building. This deepest root on our campus once again needs our support for full restoration.

About the speaker

Dennis Judd was taught US History and California History at Cuesta from 1988 until his retirement in 2015. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Cal Poly before attending UCSB for an MA degree in Public History. In addition to teaching US History and California History, Dennis also wrote the curriculum for, and taught (briefly), History 260, An Introduction to Public and Environmental History within the San Simeon Region.

Questions about the lecture should be addressed to Lara Baxley at lbaxley@cuesta.edu

Film Synopsis:

http://www.nodigasfilm.com/about/

Don't Tell Anyone (No Le Digas a Nadie) is a film about courage, facing insurmountable obstacles and the determination to fight for justice.  In an environment where silence is often seen as necessary for survival, 24 year-old Angy Rivera steps out of the shadows to share her parallel journey of being undocumented and sexually abused, an ordeal all too common in her community. We follow Angy's personal story from poverty in rural Colombia to the front page of The New York Times as she becomes a beacon in a movement for national change. Along her journey Angy inspires her undocumented mother Maria to speak openly about her status as well. Through candid interviews, we witness firsthand the all too real consequences faced by over 11 million undocumented people in America today, many of whom have no options for a pathway to citizenship.
